We live stress-filled lives, and feeling "stressed" has become commonplace in our society. In fact, it has become so common, that most of us have forgotten what it feels like to not be in a state of stress. "Stress" is our normal.
The problem is that we are not meant to exist in a perpetual state of stress, and at some point, something gives.
One day, you're suddenly really sick, or you just can't get out of bed because you've reached total burnout, or you become deeply depressed, and you feel you just can't go on. We don't get to this place of mental or physical breakdown out of nowhere, we get here because our nervous system has reached its limit, and it "breaks".
